CAS systems are typically described with a coat-check metaphor. A person hands his coat to the attendant and receives a ticket. That ticket can be used to retrieve the coat. The main difference in CAS systems is that ticket can be used over and over again to retrieve the same data. In this way, CAS systems are much more efficient than traditional storage systems. Casdex’s CAS-based metro storage cluster system deduplicates data at the block level, prior to transfer. Customer will experience reduced storage costs as well as improved transfer times for redundant data.

Content Addressable Storage (CAS) has been available for the past decade to address the needs of long term archiving of fixed content that is subject to regulatory compliance. CAS has historically been used to store infrequently changing data for long periods because calculating hashes during ingestion and verification is so processor intensive.

These limitations have precluded bringing existing CAS implementations into the cloud. Casdex has created intellectual property that solves these scaling and performance issues, allowing CAS cloud storage to be used throughout the lifecycle of the data from primary to archival tiers while meeting regulatory compliance.
